How do I become an architect in Ontario?

To become an architect in Ontario, you need to fulfill certain requirements. Firstly, you must obtain a bachelor’s degree from an accredited school of architecture or complete the syllabus of studies provided by the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC). In some cases, a master’s degree in architecture may also be necessary.

Next, you are required to complete a three-year internship under the supervision of a registered architect. This practical experience allows you to gain valuable insights and skills in the field of architecture. Additionally, passing the architect registration examination is a mandatory step in the process.

Furthermore, registration with a provincial regulatory body is mandatory in Ontario, as well as in all other provinces and the Northwest Territories. This ensures that you meet the standards and regulations set forth by the architectural profession.

Lastly, while not always a requirement, obtaining Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification offered by the Canada Green Building Council can be beneficial. Some employers may prefer or even require this certification, as it demonstrates your expertise in sustainable and environmentally friendly architectural practices.
