How do I become an architect in Iowa?

To become a licensed architect in Iowa, you need to complete a professional degree in architecture from an accredited program. This can be a five-year Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch) or a two-year Master of Architecture (M.Arch) program. Afterward, you must gain practical experience through an internship or apprenticeship, with a minimum of 3,740 hours documented and verified by a licensed architect. Passing the Architect Registration Examination (ARE), consisting of six divisions, is also required within a five-year period. To obtain licensure, you’ll need to submit an application, pay a fee, provide documentation of education, experience, and exam results, and pass a state-specific exam on Iowa’s architectural laws and regulations. Maintaining your license entails fulfilling continuing education requirements of 24 hours every two years. Failure to comply may lead to disciplinary action, including license revocation.
